JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Alaska District has established the Alaska Area Engineer Office at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Staff members from its restructured northern and southern area engineer offices consolidated March 4 to create the new shop.

The mission of the Alaska Area Engineer Office is to provide statewide construction services for the corps’ military, civil works and interagency partners. In fiscal year 2015, the corps is conducting about 200 of those projects, totaling more than $285 million.

Bill Walters is the office’s first area engineer. He is the former Southern Area Office engineer.

“Bill Walters has proven to be a valued leader of the Southern Area Engineer Office,” said Col. Christopher Lestochi, commander, U.S Army Corps of Engineers-Alaska District. “He is highly respected by our stakeholders, his peers and has been a respected federal employee for more than 37 years.”

Under Walter’s direction, the area office will oversee resident offices at Eielson Air Force Base, Clear Air Force Station, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and forts Greely and Wainwright, as well as a large majority of the state’s civil works projects. Resident offices in those locations will continue to manage projects in their area of operations.

“The united office will help to streamline and strengthen the handling of projects, ultimately making it more efficient and effective, as the six resident engineers and their talented construction people with the corps around the state perform the day-to-day missions,” said Pat Coullahan, chief, Construction and Operations Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Alaska District.

The Alaska Area Engineer Office is located at Building 2218, next to the corps’ district headquarters at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. For more information or to reach the area office, call 907-753-2835.
