USACE Announces Unprecedented Approach to Protect Juneau, Alaska from Mendenhall Glacier Floods

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), U.S. Department of Agriculture, and U.S. Department of the Interior announced Friday their intent to undertake a never-before-seen “Building Infrastructure, Not Paperwork” (BINP) approach to protect Juneau, Alaska, from future glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF). The Corps will soon solicit proposals to tackle the GLOF phenomenon in a way that seeks to expedite real, cutting-edge infrastructure prototypes on a faster timeline and at a significantly lower cost to taxpayers, deliberately avoiding burdensome processes and paperwork.

USACE completes Phase Two of flood mitigation measures in Mendenhall River Valley

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today the publication of the 2026 nationwide permits in the Federal Register. The 56 reissued and one new nationwide permit in the final action are necessary for work in streams, wetlands and other waters of the United States under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that it will reissue 56 existing nationwide permits and issue one new permit for work in wetlands and other waters that are regulated by Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and/or Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899. One existing permit will not be reissued.

Currently, there are five conceptual flood-control alternatives to be evaluated: flood-control dam(s); levees or floodwalls; bypass channels; Suicide Basin lake tap; and infrastructure relocation.

Army Executes POTUS Directive on Ambler Road Project

Trump has approved the appeal of the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA), directing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to promptly issue authorizations necessary for the establishment of the Ambler Road Project. This project will provide road transportation access to the Ambler Mining District. The Corps of Engineers will promptly act to reinstate all necessary permits under their jurisdiction.
