Herat Women's Dormitory
A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the completion of the Herat University women’s dormitory Dec.10 at Herat, Afghanistan. The Alaska District performed the contracting requirements for this project while partnering with the project management, engineering and construction operations components at the Middle East District. The 5,007 square feet dorm can accommodate 372 women and includes amenities such as administrative offices, bathrooms, volleyball and basketball courts as well as a cafeteria, laundry room, library, and computer lab on each floor. The cadre of Afghan engineers was vital to the project’s success. Herat University offers various degree programs including engineering, economics, journalism, medicine, public administration and veterinary science. Expanding opportunities for women in all aspects of society and protecting their rights is a cornerstone of the U.S. efforts in Afghanistan.
