Corps plans causeway remediation in Sitka

Published March 30, 2018

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON – The Fort Rousseau Causeway State Historical Park is a popular recreation area that offers a unique glimpse of Sitka’s World War II history.  However, the former military site also currently hosts buried remnants that may pose a hazard to human health and the environment.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to address this concern by using heavy equipment to remove contaminated soil from five islands along the causeway during April and May.

While the clean-up project is underway, access to the work sites will be limited to authorized personnel only.  Members of the public should avoid these restricted areas during this time frame.
