JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON -- JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District prepared a new feasibility study and environmental assessment for navigational improvements at Homer Harbor and is seeking public comment on the draft document.
Homer’s Port and Harbor is a regional facility serving the needs of commercial vessels operating across southcentral and western Alaska in the maritime industrial, marine transportation, and commercial fishing industries. Over time, demand has outgrown the current facility’s ability to serve this fleet safely and efficiently with both commercial and recreational use of the harbor increasing over the last several years. Severe congestion, inadequate space for mooring and inability to provide access for large vessels are among the problems the Homer Harbor is experiencing.
This study investigates the feasibility of implementing navigation improvements to enable larger vessels to call at the existing harbor in Homer, Alaska. In particular, the study examines navigation improvements outside of the existing footprint adjacent to the existing harbor.
The draft report is available for review until June 22. It may be viewed on the Alaska District’s website at: http://www.poa.usace.army.mil/Library/Reports-and-Studies/. On that webpage, look under “Documents Available for Public Review” and expand the Civil Works Tab and scroll to Homer Navigation Improvements. Hardcopies of the draft report are available at the Homer Public Library and the City Clerk’s Office at the Homer City Hall as well.
