JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON – The Corps of Engineers-Alaska District has selected Bill Walters as the new Alaska Area Office’s first engineer. He is the former Southern Alaska Area Office engineer.

“Bill Walters has proven to be a valued leader of the Southern Alaska Area Engineer Office,” said Col. Christopher Lestochi, commander, U.S Army Corps of Engineers-Alaska District. “He is highly respected by our stakeholders, his peers and has been a respected federal employee for more than 37 years.”

In his new position, Walters will oversee resident offices at Eielson Air Force Base, Clear Air Force Station, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and forts Greely and Wainwright, as well as a large majority of the state’s civil works projects.

Walters previously managed engineers, technicians and support staff on military construction at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Fort Greely and several remote military sites in Alaska; civil works construction at various locations throughout Alaska; and annual maintenance dredging at harbors throughout the state for the southern office.

Additionally, he was the resident engineer and administrative contracting officer for the corps’ Elmendorf Resident Office for five years, where he oversaw construction projects on base and at remote Air Force stations throughout Alaska.

Walters is a registered professional engineer in Alaska. He has a master’s degree in civil engineering from Stanford University, Menlo Park, California, and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
