Chris Eckert, Teck Alaska Incorporated stated purpose is to provide storage space for waste rock that would be created from mining the Aqqaluk and Qanaiyaq deposits at the Red Dog Mine. The additional waste rock storage would be required to maintain the water balance during the operation of the mine. The project site is located at the Red Dog Mine, approximately 82 miles north of Kotzebue, Alaska, at Latitude 68.05562º N., Longitude 162.855549º W. The applicant proposes to fill approximately 52 acres of waters of the United States, including wetlands, with waste rock material to extend the Main Waste Rock Dump (44 acres) and the Qanaiyaq Waste Rock Dump (8 acres). The Main Waste Dump South extension would cover 139 acres and the Qanaiyaq Dump extension would cover 31 acres, totaling approximately 170 acres. All work would be performed in accordance with the enclosed plan (sheets 1-4), dated May 5, 2017.
