    Innovative Underwater Camera System Provides Unique View of Alaska’s Murky Depths

    Accurately capturing and recording an underwater ecosystem is a difficult task and one made more difficult when it involves the deep, cold and dark waters of Alaska.     On June 5, Honorable Lucian Niemeyer and representatives for the Missile Defense Agency, Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and construction contractors gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony at Fort Greely near Delta Junction, Alaska.     Building 2205 is state-of-the-art, three-stories and will accommodate 168 enlisted personnel. The facility was planned to support Red-Flag Alaska – a series of field training exercises in a simulated combat environment for a large amount of permanent and temporary personnel. However, an anticipated influx of about 1,200 airmen following the arrival of 54 F-35A Joint Strike Fighter jets in 2020 made the additional living quarters a critical need.

    A native of Mountain Pine, Arkansas, Erik Babb, procurement technician in the Contracting Division, received Matai (mah-TIE’), a Portuguese water dog, at no cost from 832 K9’s Deputy Dogs, a Florida-based nonprofit group. The organization specializes in providing law enforcement agencies across the nation and Europe with trained bloodhounds to assist in searching for missing persons and during other life-saving events.

    Capt. Stephen Austria, project engineer in the USACE-Alaska District's Foreign Military Sales Program, carried this American flag on his expedition climbing Denali this past summer. The flag was with Austria on every mission while deployed to Iraq. He said he hopes his climb helps raise Soldier suicide awareness.

    Mike Coy, chief of the Real Estate Branch, teaches Sabrina Dornellas, real estate specialist, how to use a laser distance finder April 29 while Michelle Sappa, real estate specialist, holds a target for the required measurement. The Real Estate Branch conducted an inventory of the Alaska District’s buildings on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. The task served as a training opportunity to learn how to measure buildings, sidewalks and record the acquired data. The purpose of the assignment was to verify the real property inventory list and help prepare the real estate instrument that authorizes the district headquarters and its buildings to reside on the installation.

    From places like remote Alaskan villages to military recruiting stations across the state, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District’s Real Estate Branch is doing its part to complete the Army mission in the Last Frontier.

    Established in 2009 under the Army Contracting Command, the military contingency contracting team provides assistance to the Alaska District’s Asia Office. The district constructs schools, medical clinics and cyclone shelters on behalf of U.S. Pacific Command, which is responsible for providing humanitarian aid to 36 countries across Southeast Asia.
